CALL FOR PAPERS — American Association for Italian Studies (AAIS) Annual Conference, New York City, May 7-10, 2009

MENTAL ILLNESS ON THE BIG SCREEN

Italian cinema has offered many poignant and compelling depictions of mental illness, an often silenced and stigmatized reality that fuses the personal with the social: from Germania Anno Zero and Europa 51, through I Pugni in Tasca, to La Stanza del Figlio and Respiro.

This session intends to discuss research both on the accuracy of the cinematic portrayal of mental illness and on the role film plays in shaping people’s very perception of mental illness. Sociological, psychological, and original perspectives are particularly welcome.

Submit a 300 word abstract plus references for a 20 min. paper by January 2, 2009; include your affiliation and contact information.
